From Parisian high society to Hollywood stars via royalty, the Carita institution has seen a host of celebrities pass through its doors, cared for from head to toe by Carita’s expert hands.

Rosy, Maria and everyone who’s anyone in Paris

Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, the salon’s doors are constantly opening and closing and the telephone doesn’t stop ringing. In this high-class Parisian neighborhood, word of mouth is how things work, and Rosy and Maria cultivate their network. They are close to the contemporary art world, and spend their evenings at premières, private viewings, dinners at the homes of famous artists or behind closed doors with fashion designers, while Sundays are reserved for shopping. Joëlle Poulain, who began working here in 1966, says : “ I used to take the train in. One day I saw the Baron de Rothschild, another I saw Catherine Deneuve. They never closed the shop, everyone lived there together”. The very wealthy had their treatments done at home. As such, Joëlle would go to the homes of the Queen of Jordan, the King of Morocco or other African presidents.

Sophia, Ursula, Marlon and the others

The salon was just as crazy. Sophia Loren came in to buy her famous wigs, five at a time. Ursula Andress used to arrive out of breath having run to escape the paparazzi. On Mondays, the salon opened only for Jayne Mansfield, having left Hollywood in the middle of August, draped in a white mink coat. Christophe Carita, who himself also worked in this frenzy, tells a very peculiar anecdote in The Carita Saga: “One day I see a discreet gathering in one of the salons {…}, it was Marlon Brando, stripped to the waist, explaining to the young employees that he didn’t need a private booth and that he intended to dye his hair for the movie The Young Lions.”

Carita and the cinema

Many film-makers and producers entrust their actresses’ hair to the Carita Sisters. The tomboy cut, at the time called ‘the Jean Seberg’ for A Bout de Souffle, was a stroke of genius by Rosy, who to congratulate herself said “she’s going to shatter the screen, that’s all”. Just as audacious were Mireille Darc’s bangs, cut on a whim, the blonde Deneuve, Brigitte Bardot’s pony tail, Simon Signoret’s huge bun for Casque d’or, or Juliette Gréco’s short hair. “And how do you see Marlène Jobert in my film?” asked Audiard.

Not wanting to be self-important, Maria says of celebrities “I don’t see the difference”. She taught her staff that they should treat their ‘everyday’ client as if she were a queen.

Would you be asked where to find the best American barber shop, you would probably answer New York, Chicago or Los Angeles. And you would be wrong. Knoxville, Tennessee has been harbouring the best U.S barbershop according to New York Times’ About.com.

For three years in a row, the prestigious media has singled out men hair and barber salon Frank’s Barber Shop. Founder and owner Frank Gambuzza now possesses six hairdressing salon chains and is head of America/Canada Intercoiffure Association. Both the man and the salon share the same history of a small outsider becoming a major name among beauty professionals. Follow us as we unveil what the American Dream looks like.

Following the American Dream, from West New York to Knoxville

The story of Frank’s Barber Shop starts hundreds of miles away from Knoxville, in the Italian neighbourhood of West New York, New Jersey. Ten-year-old Frank Gambuzza was hired as a shoe shiner by J.Vito’s Continental Barbershop’s owner Joe Vito Lupo. Young Frank was quickly fascinated by all the « wise men » coming in for a cut and a trim. They found in the barber shop a place where they can relax, talk business, discuss the news and play poker in the back shop. When time came for Frank to open his own place in Knoxville, he remembered this special atmosphere and founded Frank’s Barber Shop, a hairdressing salon and barber shop for men only. The new place was designed like a safe heaven inspired from another era. As Frank told Shoppers News Now’s Anne Hart, « it is a form of art that we brought back to life when we opened Frank’s Barber Shop. It is an old-school barbershop… but better! »

Pool, base-ball and root beer

A trip to Frank’s Barber Shop is like a journey back to a long-gone era in America’s heartland. The vast waiting room looks like a billiard room. Large LCD screens broadcast the latest baseball and football games. Some clients, bended over the pool tables, discuss the images while playing. Others are sitting in cosy Club armchairs, reading sports newspapers and drinking ice-cold root beers. The buzzing chit-chat is half-covered by Hank Williams’ raw vocals played out by loud speakers in the near-by salon. Many clients admit they come to Frank’s partly to enjoy the waiting room. Frank’s wife Belinda says the place has been designed for men, although women are welcome to spend time there too. With a smile, she told local NBC news channel WBIR: « Here, clients can come and drink a root beer, watch the game, read the sports news, play backgammon, darts, pool… It is a real paradise for men. »

The simpler, the more dapper

Frank’s Barber Shop offers simple and straight-to-the-point A-class service. A unique, « out-of-bed » and easy-to-maintain hair cut has been the salon’s signature hair style for decades. Fathers come for the Frank’s Classic cut, while sons enjoy the Frank’s Junior Classic. Beauty treatments are as simple as it gets with only four options: Frank’s Classic Shave, Beard and Moustache Trim, Frank’s Gentlemen facial and Frank’s Executive Hand Details.

The simpler, the more dapper, one would say

But the secret behind Frank’s Barber Shop’s success probably lays in such simplicity. When traditional know-how meets an enjoyable environment, no wonder clients are satisfied.

Season 5 of the Game of Thrones series ended on a high note last June with even more awaited developments, unforeseen deaths, mind-blowing locations and just as many spectacular hairstyles. Kevin Alexander is the hair stylist for the series, responsible for characters including Cersei Lannister, Khaleesi and Sansa Stark.

Destined to be a hair stylist

After beginning his career as a hairdressing apprentice, at 27 years old, Kevin Alexander finally pursued his dream of becoming a film hair stylist. He collaborated on huge productions such as The Chronicles of Narnia and Casino Royale before then seizing the opportunity to work on Game of Thrones. His work and his thirty-strong team of hairstylists have been recognised by a number of prizes including the prestigious Emmy award.

Bespoke hairstyles for Game of Thrones

From the very first season, Kevin Alexander considered the exceptional size of the cast and decided to create a hair ‘palette’ for each of the opposing families; blond for the Lannister family and brown or auburn for the Starks. He even created a water-based colour to find the perfect red for young Sansa without damaging her naturally-blonde hair.

Likewise, transforming brunette Emilia Clarke into the ultra-blonde Daenerys Targaryen (Khaleesi) was not an easy task. Talking to Capital Hair and Beauty, Alexander explains: “Emilia has very dark – almost black – hair so we have to tightly plait her own hair, cover that with a ‘bald cap’ and then attach a platinum blond wig over the top. For this process, we have to allow around 2 hours.” Not forgetting the difficult weather conditions experienced in Morocco (where the series was often filmed), which made the wigs frizz.

Hairstyles for the male characters were just as important. Kit Harington, who plays Jon Snow, had a ‘hair contract’ with HBO. His dark curls, coloured by Kevin Alexander, were a vital part of his gloomy and mysterious character and he was banned from changing the style!

When creating the hairstyles, Kevin Alexander took inspiration from the original novel as well as the Pre-Raphaelite era, hence the mix of loose and braided hair as well as artistic high chignons. His most difficult challenge was maintaining his level of creativity during the height of the show’s success. His principal goal was to make everything look good for the TV and it’s safe to say that he has succeeded!

From the Internet sensation of Korean hair styling games to the brown curls of the Gangnam style video, Seoul inspired hair styles are conquering the world. Here we return to the origins of a success that was founded on innovation and experience.

From magic perms to magic volume: impeccable hair trends

Doll-faces, doe-eyes, porcelain skin… Korean beauty ideals leave little or nothing to chance. Bottle fed K-pop, dramas and passionate romantic series, they have developed their own precise beauty routines to build a greater resemblance with their idols. Gifted with abundant and glossy hair, they swear by the long lasting and innovative techniques created by Korean hairstylists, who possess a know-how that is truly extraordinary.

An air of magic lingers over Korean salons. Just one trip to the hairdresser suffices to maintain bouncy curls and seemingly never-ending lengths. The secret of the impeccable wavy romantic look of the drama stars is without a doubt magic volume, a unique technique that unites soft and neutralising products to create curls that last up to six months. The magic straightener, a close relation to the previous technique, promotes soft and shining hair through a similar but longer process known as “hair relaxing”.

The secrets behind Korean hair styles: salons of all shapes and sizes

If your hair is in poor condition, Korean salons are known to offer something of a multisensory treatment. Pop into the Avenue Juno cafe, found right at the heart of the well-connected region of Gangnam in Seoul, for a latte and delicious cookie followed by a cranial massage that offers a bracket of total well-being to each woman who pushes open the door of the hair salon. The founder of the Juno Hair salons, Kang Yoon-sun, is one of the people spearheading the philosophy that sees beauty as a sensation that emanates from the inside. As the head of this empire dedicated to female beauty, Kang Yoon-sun aspires to share these authentic values with her clientele. Presenting the philosophy of her salons to the Korean media, she has been quoted as saying: “I think of it quite simply as the sharing of warmth and caring for one other.”

Korean hairstyling across the world, for men as well as woman

As evidence of the creativity of these hair care treatments and their compatibility with modern trends, Korean based salons are multiplying across the world. In Los Angeles, the expert team of stylists and colourists at Atelier by Tiffany offer premium services, imported directly from Seoul. From the “hair manicure”, a Korean method that gives hair a dazzling new shine to treatments that go right into the scalp in order to promote hair growth, these options directly evoke the trendiest salons in Gangnam. K-pop style makeovers are also available in this luminous and somewhat enchanted space with a ‘Chateau de Versailles’ vibe.

This warm and welcoming environment has also found its niche in London, where you can find Ki Lee, the Korean barber at the head of the Hurwundeki salons. This visionary hair stylist has opened three spaces where men can go for a sharp and stylish hair cut along with a plate of bibimbap, another authentic taste of Korea. The concept of a haircut that is stylish and easy to manage is declining in the world of masculine hair styling. Ki Lee’s secret? A quick and masterful cut, inspired by Asian techniques, which guarantees a harmonious regrowth process. He came up with the concept of the “recessionista” – a combination of recession and fashionista – which is based on the Korean values of innovation and altruism. In the columns of Courier Paper, this capillary artist said on the subject that: “Business is all about providing a service. So I set a really good price for everything, while still offering top quality.”

The digital age has spared no field of business, and new technologies have made their mark in the world of hairstyling. A spotlight on a domain that used to be done entirely by hand, and has now taken on a 2.0 aspect.

Anne-Caroline Paucot leads conferences and workshops about careers of the future. At these meetings, she regularly asks her audience which job they think will never change. The answer is invariably the same: hairstyling. “Many think that this artisanal job will not be affected by new digital technologies. This is a big mistake!” she explains.

Hairstyling 2.0

Still, research is being made in many applications that may revolutionize the job in the more or less long term. The first advance has to do with the introduction of digital technology in salons: client management and inventory software, online booking platforms, automatic text reminders for appointments are all developing very rapidly. Attending the Salon Futur en Seine last June, the AGT Digital Company gives hairstylists a new way of training remotely thanks to Hair Teach 3D. This application lets them follow tutorials, then practice on augmented-reality models before trying out the technique on their own clients.

Augmented reality in hairstyling

Panasonic, on the other hand, presented its smart mirror in 2014. Equipped with cameras and a face recognition system, it lets you visualize clients with different hairstyles and to anticipate the result before cutting or dying a single strand. Aaron Dorn, a British studio hairstylist and former computer technician, is excited about these new inventions. “During a consultation, these mirrors will certainly help hairstylists to better understand their client’s wishes because misunderstandings may lead to bad experiences and client dissatisfaction.”

A salon like a video game

James Bremner, a marketing conslutant for salons on New York, imagines how the Kinect technology, developed by Microsoft for its Xbox to control video games without a joystick, can be applied in salons: a client walks in the door, is recognized and greeted on a screen set up at reception, their profile is displayed as well as the products best suited for their hair, perhaps at a discount, and their favorite drink is already being made. James Bremner adds that information about the client can be displayed on the mirror and the hairstylist can control it with gestures without even touching the screen. “These emergent developments are the basis of new creative business models that will help hairstylists fully concentrate on their client,” he explains.

In hair salons nowadays, science has rethought hand craftsmanship, modernity has combined with ancestral know-how and technology is supporting aesthetics. The result: excellence at the hands of our hairstylists.

By offering comprehensive care for the face, body and hair, Rosy and Maria invented global beauty, bringing together several different professions in the same salon. They revolutionized the aesthetic world.

Cheeky: Rosy and Maria were 15 years old, when they opened their first salon in Toulouse, taking over functions which, for the most part, had been held by men. Bold: the sisters, were only 18 years old, when they settled in Paris, amongst Fashion Designers’ houses… visionary, avant-gardist, there are not enough words to describe the intrepid genius with which the house of Carita, driven by these young ladies, revolutionized the beauty codes of the era.

Out of the two sisters, Maria was an artist ‘par excellence’ as well as a perfectionist. Her nephew, Christophe Carita explains in his book, the “Carita Saga“: “When she had finished a hairstyle, she would say to herself that would be even better with a little more make-up here, a little less there… then she would think of the perfect blouse … and finally she would suggest adding some jewelry.” Maria would ask herself: “And how we could have done a hairstyle justice, if the hair wasn’t healthy and beautiful? And if the skin wasn’t pearly?”

Constantly striving for perfection, with an ardent desire to please, Maria and Rosy, asked their beauticians to extend treatments in the treatment rooms. Joëlle Poulain, joined the beauty house in 1966, and remembers with nostalgia: “If we were carrying out a hand treatment, Maria would say, ‘go up to the elbow!’ After, when we saw a customer’s back that had traces of acne and uneven skin on the neckline, we would work across those areas, as well.” It is how the full body care concept was born, this idea of global beauty, because “the back is as good as the front” as the two sisters liked to say. With a sharp eye for detail, the sisters even went as far as to enlist the services of Kao, a Chinese pedicurist – rather exotic in this post-war period – “who was so gifted that Edmonde Charles-Roux travelled from Marseille for him,” explains Christophe Carita in his book.

In the treatment room, the customer enjoys the undivided attention of the beautician. Listening and observing the customer enables them to offer the best possible treatment for the customer’s skin-type and to meet expectations. Rosy and Maria were diehard perfectionists. “Because they could never let a client leave looking “like that.” Meaning, not beautifully transformed, which is why they needed treatment rooms for both skin care and makeup,” explains Christophe Carita, alluding to the expansion of 11, rue du faubourg SaintHonoré in Paris, of which they were so proud.

After having coiffed, massaged and transformed clients, they also sold shampoo for different hair types, designed a specially adapted facial mask and anti-aging serum, which were all part of the magic exclusive to the house of Carita. Women and men could enjoy comprehensive treatments and continue the treatment at home. By offering tailor-made, head to toe treatments, Rosy and Maria had created the first spa.

There is a common point between Vanessa Hudgens and President Snow, Katherine Schwarzenegger and Kate Hudson, or Peeta Mellark and American Horror Story’s Moira O’Hara. They all bear the trademark of one of Hollywood top artists: colorist Cassondra Kaeding.

A film colorist

Cassondra can usually be found at Sally Hershberger Salon in the heart of West Hollywood, LA. But more often than not, she demonstrates her talent on-set. Lately, you witnessed her art without even knowing it in Hunger Games: Mockingjay. Peeta’s cold blond and Finnick Odair’s Californian gold are both signed by Cassondra Kaeding. Before that, Cassondra designed the soft ombre of Lea Michelle’s famous character, Glee’s Rachel Berry.

At age 32, Cassondra has become as famous as the stars she takes good care of. In an interview to The Colorist in 2012, she admitted that hairdressing has always been a vocation: “I went to college in Denver before I went to beauty school but hairdressing has always been a passion.” Only a few months before the interview, she had signed actress Rooney Mara’s rich dark brown for David Fincher’s The Girl with a dragon tattoo inspired by the Millenium saga. Mara being a natural blonde, she asked Cassondra to help her turn into the rebellious brunette.

Fame did not take long to come along after such a tour-de-force. Cassondra’s collaboration with Kate Hudson fast-tracked the colorist to immediate stardom. Hudson’s natural and rich blond has been praised just as much as her elegant fashion sense, from the Golden Globes to the Oscars and the Met Gala. Her hair color is so subtle it is hard to tell it is not her natural hue.

A beauty professional’s secret

It is true that subtlety is Cassondra’s playground. She tries and never goes further than two shades away from her client’s natural color. Instead, she plays with luminous shines. So, what’s her secret? A strange and intricate net she used to highlight strands that will help her keep the new color natural. The technique might look astonishingly complex but it proves it can do miracles. Dark brown’s Josh Hutcherson can thank the funny net for Peeta’s natural blond hue (Hunger Games).

Cassondra is the inspiring proof that passion and innovation are keys to success for professional beauty artists. Cassondra’s participation in 2014 campaign “Live in Levis” has demonstrated how her artistry now goes far beyond the closed doors of hairdressing salons. So, how cool is being a colorist ? A lot, Cassondra Kaeding would probably answer.

Harmonising beauty techniques with our packed schedules is often quite a feat. Luckily, beauty apps to help us with this process are multiplying, divided into many categories to satisfy our needs, notably in terms of manicures and the reintroduction of nail art. Here is our tour of what we think are the six best platforms, each according to its speciality.

1. Simone: The app for your emergency manicure needs

Founded by Caroline and Florence, two busy working girls, the app Simone revolutionises the at-home manicure: this beauty app for the iPhone promises flexible meetings for girls who are short on time. The two friends confess that their project was thought up “completely based on the beauty-related needs and desires of their entourage, in order to simplify the life of busy, urban women.” Among their emblematic offers are a meticulous and 100% ecological hand massage, nourishing treatments and green clay manicures. Ideal at breakfast, for a beautiful start to the day.

2. ManiCult: the in-office manicure

Manicult’s founders Virginie Pham and Maxime Fauché were inspired by similar phenomena. They also saw the constant pressure to combine professionalism, elegance and beauty as an everyday challenge. In order to liberate space in our already full diaries, ManiCult’s nail artists get out of the office to give an express manicure, during people’s lunch breaks for example. In just fifteen minutes, nails are reinvigorated and spirits restored by the feeling of having won some time back thanks to a break that restores well-being. Almost a hundred and fifty companies in Ile-de-France have already succumbed to this concept, which illumines women’s days thanks to thirty two different colours of nail polish.

3. GlossPod: travelling gel manicures

GlossPod’s expert gel manicurists travel all over London to meet with their clients for manicures and pedicures and offer very flexible appointments. In spite of a squeezed schedule, this way you can benefit from all of the steps of a semi-permanent manicure, including a cuticle massage. It is always a real bonus not to have to worry about the state of your nails for three weeks. In case of an accident following the intervention, an ‘emergency’ option can be included in the price to assure the repair of all breakages. Available on iPhone and Android.

4. Milk: a manicure and massage between friends

At Milk, the nail artists come to you to add some sparkle to your everyday routine. Prepare the cocktails and Milk will transform an evening between friends into a true and successful pamper party! Each guest receives a beauty treatment or massage as a gift, and you will be pampered! A team of professionals join you at your house with a wide range of varnish colours and a fiery playlist for the occasion. To give your manicure or pedicure a twist, the beauticians also offer Indian massages which can transform your pamper party into a real moment of relaxation.

5. CityMani: luxury manicure parties

CityMani, the app which is creating something of a buzz in New York circles, is specialised in the organisation of at-home manicures with friends. Be it for Mothers’ day, a bridal shower or an anniversary, you can choose the best party manicure for your needs and taste. Gerry Holford, a manicurist to the stars who has worked for some of the biggest names in the design world (Tommy Hilfiger, Donna Karan…), is at the helm of this team of nail artists. His mission: “Gerry believes that all women alike deserve red carpet ready nails”

6. Pamper: a couture manicure at yours

Run out of ideas for nail art? Pamper offers a spectacular gallery of nail designs ready for you to try at home. At the heart of Silicon Valley, you can get an appointment for couture nails in under 48 hours. With tie-dye effects or sparkling jewels available among the options, as many as high fashion hands require, even when you cease to account for the time your hands spend at work! Classic manicures and pedicures are also available for those who want a more business-friendly style.

Despite the fact that one year ago biologists solemnly declared society had hit “beard peak ” (the point where the more people grow facial hair the less attractive it is), there are still signs aplenty that the international and pan-generational love affair with the mandible carpet still has a long way to grow.

One of the most hotly anticipated exhibitions of 2015 is Somerset House’s Beards – a photographic celebration of pogonophiles, people who love beards (5-29 March). Meanwhile the newly launched dating app, Bristlr, is dedicated exclusively to beardy blokes and their admirers. And then of course, there’s the boom in both grooming products targeting the hirsute male (from labels like Baxter of California, Natty Man or Murdocks), as well as a new generation of barbers shop,s including London’s new Barber & Parlour (B&P) which offers an all-day experience and nifty amenities, such as the indie cinema in its basement.

The recently opened B&P occupies a prime spot in the hip neighborhood of Hackney, whose trend setting inhabitants, along with those of Portland and Brooklyn, were among the early adopters of the millenial fashion for facial hair, back in 2005. According to cultural commentators, like the New York Time’s Ekow Eshun, the dot com bust, 9/11 and women’s increasing financial power spurred young men into sprouting whiskers, as a means of both expressing their yearning for a simpler time and re-asserting their masculinity.

Beards subsequently entered the mainstream, thanks to the endorsement of hipsters, celebrities like David Beckham and George Clooney, as well as the popularity of the Movember campaign. There’s also growing acceptance of facial hair in the traditionally conservative boardroom (with Google co-founder, Sergey Brin, and Goldman Sach’s chief executive, Lloyd C. Blankfield, all on the bandwagon) – although anything longer than a mid-length beard is a no-no here.

The beard boom initially hurt what was once seen as an unstoppable growth industry – men’s grooming. In 2013-2014 there was a £72 million slash in sales of shaving products and skincare, in the UK alone. However its not all bad news, as the decline in wet shaving products has paved the way for the steady rise of facial hair grooming products.

Barbershops are also making a big comeback with over 150 of them springing up on the UK’s beleaguered high streets in 2013, more than any other kind of business, throwing shade on more expensive unisex hair salons in the process.

The barbershop 2.0 is all about accessorizing and self-expression, with the staff providing invaluable tips on how to keep your facial furniture neatly trimmed, moisturized and sculpted into shape. It’s also about being manly.

“Yes, it’s a very masculine environment, like a private members club where town meets country” acknowledges Brendan Murdock, founder of cool, high-end gentlemen’s grooming emporium Murdock, which has spawned six London branches in under a decade, in addition to a product range encompassing everything from beard moisturizers, to special horn beard brushes. “Our aim is to create a lifestyle brand, with events, books and a space where people want to belong.”

Unsurprisingly, for someone whose hero product is a beard oil, the 39-year-old is wary of making a big pronouncement on when the beard might finally fall out of favor, though he’s posited elsewhere that long hair with beards, or even the long derided mustache, will be the next big trend to be embraced by the fashion forward. For him, facial hair is a welcome counterpoint to the homogeneity of contemporary male fashion, a way for men to express their personality and experiment. However, whatever the next big thing might be, Murdock and his fellow players in the grooming industry will be primed and ready to evolve with it: “I genuinely think that our role is to challenge our customers and encourage them to constantly push their boundaries.”
