She has modeled for the biggest fashion houses, been the muse for Pucci, Hermès, John Galliano and Moschino, and even Vogue dubbed her one of its 30 top models of the noughties. And no wonder. Her androgynous look and statutory height—5’8— made her stand out from the Brazilian bombshell look of the time, and caught the eye of Givenchy’s artistic director, Riccardo Tisci, who made her the face of the brand and its fragrance, Dahlia Noir.
Propelled into the fashion history books, Mariacarla Boscono now stands at the age of 35, with a career as long and charmed as her inky-black hair. Said locks, combined with her unique Roman charm, won over Redken, who’ve chosen her to be its latest muse joining a diverse crop of inspirational women: Suki Waterhouse, the Brazilian and South-Korean models Lea T and Soo Joo Park respectively, uber-blogger Chiara Ferragni and singer Sky Ferreira.
Redken’s artistic director, Guido Palau, designed the looks for the latest campaign, a full circle moment for the fellow Italians, who have spent a lot of their storied careers working together. FAB met with Mariacarla Boscono to talk about her new role.
Who are your favorite designers?
“There’s a long list! I have a very strong relationship with my best friend Riccardo Tisci, we’ve known each other for a long time. And Donatella Versace, Karl Lagerfeld and Miuccia Prada. Forgive me if I forget many, many, many others. I love each of them in a different way!”
Who is your style icon?
“My mom. She’s a stylish, cool woman who puts hot rollers in every morning, even if she’s staying at home to work in her garden. She always has red nail polish and fancy glasses and a proper, very ‘out-there’ type of fashion. And also personality!”
Can you tell us something you can’t live without?
“My daughter! Her name is Marialucas and she’s two and a half. I can’t live without love, family and friends.”
What is your definition of beauty?
“It’s different for everyone. For me, it’s about confidence and happiness. When you’re in love or you’ve had a good night’s sleep or even a good plate of pasta, you’re happy and shine in your own way.”
What’s your favorite hairstyle?
“A braid on the side— it’s quick, looks cool and my daughter likes it. She’s obsessed with touching my hair! I can’t just do it in a ponytail, she would go mad. But she likes the ‘treccia’, that’s how we say braids in Italian.”
What is your favorite Redken product?
“When you work so much and do so many fashion shows, you need to have a good shampoo and a good conditioning mask. I personally use the All Soft line from Redken and it’s totally brilliant. I look like I have new hair!”
