Seductress, provocative, glamorous and rebellious, Lady Gaga never fails to surprise her fans with each of her amazing transformations. For her astonishing performance at this year’s Super Bowl, she flaunted a platinum blonde do highlighted by pastel pink ends. In the middle of her performance, she revealed a cascade of buttery curls. Gaga’s personal hairdresser Frederic Aspiras, who used Matrix products for this look, reveals his secrets from this historical night to FAB.
Lady Gaga stunned the crowds at the Superbowl when she launched her performance with an acrobatic jump into a void, landing on a platform wearing a perfectly positioned vintage-style bun. A series of jumps later, she revealed an incredible platinum cascade of curls, putting her somewhere between Hollywood star and Blondie. ”We wanted to make sure when she took it down, it fell perfectly into place,” explains Frederic Aspiras, her hairstylist since 2009, who used Matrix products for the event. “And, when she released the hair, it still held the curl and bounce.” Of course, each look had been meticulously rehearsed before the show, to complement her sexy, rock’n’roll outfit: crystal-embellished body, blood-red lips, glittered eyelids inspired by Bowie. “A week before the event, we chose the final looks for the performance and prepared the color to make sure it was bright enough,” continues Aspiras. “I used the Light Master color with Matrix Bond Ultim8 to protect the strands. I love this product since it doesn’t require extra time – just blend it into the color. We also wanted to keep the roots slightly darker to maintain a contrast and dip-dyed ends in the pastel ‘Quartz Pink’ tone of Matrix Color Sync Watercolors to add dimension.”
The Perfect Blow-dry
To maintain a perfect finish, the hairdresser worked with several Matrix products. “The idea is to layer the products,” he explains. The secret: a maximum of hairspray. As for the second look, it is more complex: it requires starting with mousse on wet hair, and finishing with texturizing and shine spray. Aspiras is a master of these big, bold styles for this celebrity, who favors over-the-top dos and extreme colors. These amazing creations have included everything from neon yellow curls at the 2010 Grammys, a blonde crown of curls and spikes evoking Medusa at a Marc Jacobs party, and a huge pompadour topped with lavender bows on the streets of London. These living sculptures reflect the identity of the singer, who is radical, ever-morphing, sexual, and who pays homage to the greats of the underground and the counterculture.
