Four months after going blonde, this stylist, photographer, writer and Insta-star talks about her life that’s full of clashing color. From her own perception to her new fashion collections, including a suitable beauty routine, Margaret Zhang also explains how she dealt with the radical switch from being a brunette to a blonde.
E-influencer & Insta-star
At the age of just 24, Margaret is a photographer, stylist, author, artistic director and consultant for such big brands as Gucci and Dior. Especially thanks to her blog Shine By Three, which combines fashion, beauty, lifestyle and much more and has been at the forefront of good taste and all things genius for eight years, the Australian has clearly made a name for herself. In 2015, “Elle” Australia even awarded her its Digital Style Award as Influencer of the Year. Along with models Toni Garrn and Cameron Russell, Margaret now incarnates the identity of the Kérastase brand: “I really love the hair mask! I use it once a week when I wash my hair and it makes such a dramatic difference to the body and brightness of my hair,” she says.
With her 864,000 followers on Instagram @margaret__zhang, we might imagine that each of her posts is carefully thought out and confident. Yet in late April, Margaret published a photo of herself as a blonde, with the post causing a whirlwind of positive comments and more than 10,000 likes. Like Soo Joo Park, and more recently, Moon Kyu Lee, Margaret is one more on the list of women of Asian origin who have switched to blonde hair.
“I feel like it makes me want to dress more aggressively to offset the blondeness. It makes me feel sunnier. It makes me feel genuinely beachy,” Margaret Zhang says, still reeling from the radical change.
“A New Color Affects Every Other Aspect Of How You Style Yourself”
Between her creative artistic work for brands such as Gucci, Dior, Uniqlo, Louis Vuitton and Luxus, her artistic direction and photography for the magazines “L’Officiel”, “Harper’s Bazaar”, “Nylon”, “Marie Claire” and “Elle”, Margaret has made a name for herself in the world of fashion and beyond.
In 2016, “Forbes” named her as one of the 30 most influential people under 30 on the web. From this, we can follow Margaret’s advice to the letter:
“I have started to experiment with a little more color – particularly in make-up, which I never really used to wear because colors can look quite gimmicky with black hair. I think the blonde has softened my face, so that bold color choices are much less aggressive. A new color affects every other aspect of how you style yourself. There are things I will wear now with blonde hair that I don’t think would have worked so well with my natural black hair.” Margaret Zhang
As for the delicate question of “What color of clothing best suits platinum blonde hair?”, Margaret unflappably answers: “It’s more about how you wear it. You can just wear whatever and if you are cool with it, everyone else will be as well.”
