Instagram has become an important source of inspiration for hair stylists, salons and customers. Professionals can recommend certain types of colors and styles, as well as tapping into rising color trends to showcase their skills. Instagram is also releasing more and more tools for salons to let users directly book with salons, trying to become the middleman between interested customers and businesses.
It is therefore important to know which hair color hashtags to search or use, in order to transform keen efforts into results. We’ve ranked more than 50 color trends by popularity of their associated hashtags.
Natural Colors & Punk Are Top Of The Ranking
Ranked first is red hair shades as they are the most popular on Instagram. However, this favored look shouldn’t come as a surprise as in the US, redheads are the most prominent in TV commercials.
Apart from other natural hair colors (blonde/brown), we note that colors that used to be “punk” are now mainstream: green hair or purple hair, for example. Worn by Kelly Osbourne, Nicole Richie or Katy Perry, #purplehair has well over 3 million publications.
“Alternative models” like Alice Mcmunn who are very active on Instagram first lead the appetite for these hair inspirations, which is becoming more democratic. The fashion week spring summer 2017 neo-punk hairdos were all the rage and the #punkhair has more than 55 000 publications.
And with growing hair color innovations, it is now easier to explore their identity and experiment with color. There is a democratization of the shades that goes beyond subcultures, thanks to the boom of pastel shades, unlocking the creative possibilities like mermaid hair or pastel hair with #pastelhair about to raise 800 000 publications.
The Alternative Shades, A Playful World
Unicorn (#unicornhair) and rainbow hair (#rainbowhair) rank very high on Instagram. But beyond these fairly new colorful ideas, more subtle color nuances also prove successful: lilac hair, turquoise hair or copper hair can be categorized in this group, and celebrities like Jaime King or Anna Paquin did not hesitate to try them. It is worth noticing that these are safe options for the customers to express their own personalities without going too wild.
Color Shades To Eat, Drink, Breathe, Think About
Hair colors in this third group are all about senses: a touch of mint, a drizzle of chocolate? Instagram turns into a colorful kitchen!
As in a chef’s kitchen, salons explore combinations of colors like blue and black; like a painter’s workshop, hairstyling turns into a piece of art like the oil slick hair trend.
The Past And Up & Coming Trends
In this final group, new color trends compete with on-going niche trends.
Blorange which skyrocketed in January 2017, or ‘peek-a-boo hair’, which has continued to be a trend for the last couple of years, keeps attracting hairstylists and customers.
The variations are endless!
