Aromatherapy: Valentine’s Day Rituals

February 12th 2016

Mzia Shiman’s oxygen facials are the stuff of legend. Just ask any of Victoria’s Secrets’ celestial supermodels who entrust her with their glowing complexions. She also happens to weave aromatherapy magically into her signature treatments with such ease that no one ever leaves her office red or blotchy. With that in mind, we thought we’d ask her how to incorporate some of her potent aromatic nous, including the heavenly Decléor products she swears by, into your Valentine’s Day routine. Here’s to a love-filled weekend!

Aromatic Attraction

Aromatherapy can be a great way to support the senses and to make your day that little bit more pleasurable. And we love that there are so many ways to use it. “There must be quite a few things a hot bath won’t cure, but I don’t know many of them,” Sylvia Plath wrote in The Bell Jar. What does “a study in olfactory desire” smell like? If you ask Mzia, she’ll tell you rose. “Roses and romance go hand in hand. The essential oil of roses is a known aphrodisiac, whose very scent can invoke romantic feelings.”

You might think a bath on Valentine’s Day is cliché, but it’s no coincidence we associate the decadent treat with love. Bathing promotes the release of endorphins and dopamine in the brain, leading to feelings of well-being and euphoria. It’s the perfect time to relax: no phone, no noise, nothing to distract you and your significant other’s Zen. We love a few drops of rose oil in a soaking hot tub preceded by a yummy smelling concoction to make your skin glow.

“When planning a romantic evening, you can warm two drops of rose oil between the palms of your hands, enjoying the delicate fragrance, and apply it to your face and neck using light smoothing strokes. Alternatively, you can diffuse the rose (not used in the bath) throughout your home or bedroom.” This deeply compelling, head-turning blend produces an instant, almost obsessive “what is that?” reaction from anyone within sniffing range, such is its potency. Bingo.

And the rose excels in skincare too. “It is incredible for reducing inflammation and comforting sensitive skin, really one of the best oils you could use to give you a glowing, fresh, and youthful appearance. Also, its pleasant aroma keeps you charged and feeling happy,” smiles Mzia who exudes a certain knowing sensuality that makes this statement sound utterly convincing.

Energize Your Emotions

For those of you that may need a spring in your step to get you in the mood for love, try Mzia’s energizing blend. “Although essential oils are mostly relaxing and soothing, the process of using them can actually energize you for the whole day. After applying your essential oil, you feel fresh, you smell fresh, and you are ready to take on your day. I would recommend using Decléor’s Aromessence Neroli serum. Everyone should carry a little bottle of neroli in their purse and apply it to their skin (i.e. neck, upper lip), or simply smell it when they are stressed. It only takes 10-15 minutes for the essential oil to circulate throughout the entire body.” Here’s to looking (and feeling) bright and alert—even on the earliest of mornings. We’re sold!

Mzia’s Valentine’s Day Ritual

“My favorite routine to pamper myself on Valentine’s Day is to go to a spa that I love to get a body massage and a great facial. Looking good and feeling good for a special dinner, indoors or outdoors, is my greatest pleasure. There is no woman, regardless of age, who does not love being pampered. This holds true especially on Valentine’s Day, which is all about having bright, hydrated skin.”

The Power Of Smell

From a simple drop of bergamot oil to a splash of perfume, picking a scent has always been deeply personal—what works for one nose, after all, might not work for another. Which raises one critical question: What do you wear for a night out with your favorite flame? “Fragrance has a long history with seduction. A woman’s perfume is designed to create an atmosphere of beauty and to transport you with her scent. Even great candles can be seductive when you walk into a wonderfully scented room. It’s the same concept when it comes to the body or face,” says Mzia. “How many times has it happened that you hugged someone and did not want to let go because they smelled so wonderful and inviting? It’s all about aromatherapy, and how it has the power to affect your senses and take your breath away.”

 An Abundance Of Oils

With heightened senses and a love for delicately refined essences, it seemed natural that Mzia would collaborate with Decléor. “Our sense of smell is so magnificent and precise that we actually have the ability to pinpoint up to 10,000 different smells. Jasmine, neroli, and ylang ylang essential oils can invoke romantic feelings with their exquisite scents. Applying them to your skin or even smelling their aromas has the ability to invigorate you, making them popular choices for use on special occasions such as Valentine’s Day.”
