With over a million posts on Instagram and thanks to celebrity ambassadors such as Rihanna, Cara Delevingne, Nicole Richie and Kylie Jenner, the grey hair trend is a worldwide phenomenon, popular with women aged 18 to 80! From light, almost white greys to dark, charcoal tones, this hair color is one of summer 2017’s true success stories, along with other unique shades like blorange and chocolate mauve.
FAB met up with colorist Sarah Black – from the Linton & Mac salon in Aberdeen, Scotland, and winner of the L’Oréal Professionnel Color Trophy 2017 – to ask for her professional advice on how to get the perfect shade of grey.
FAB: What’s the perfect grey hair?
Sarah Black: If done properly, it can look chic, edgy and expensive.
FAB: Would you recommend grey hair to any client, regardless of their hair type or skin tone?
S.B.: Cooler skin tones are the most suited to the grey hair trend, and it sits really beautifully next to light eyes.
FAB: Can you tell us about the coloring process?
S.B.: Well, grey toners have to sit on top of an extremely light base. This is crucial for getting the perfect result: there’s no way to achieve a great grey hair if the base is yellow or unevenly bleached. Once the base is satisfying, you use toners to create the color. The palette ranges from light silvers to dark slate greys.
FAB: As a colorist, what would you say are the technical challenges of the grey hair color?
S.B.: Maintaining the hair’s condition is key: that’s why we swear by Smartbond from L’Oréal Professionnel. Another big problem can be not creating a light enough base to start with and then relying too much on toners. For the client, longevity can be tricky: any artificial colors can be difficult to maintain.
FAB: How should you look after grey hair?
S.B.: It does require quite a lot of upkeep, so come prepared! As a salon, we at Linton & Mac offer short maintenance appointments to keep your color looking fresh. To look after your hair at home, L’Oréal Professionnel Silver shampoo and Smartbond 3 conditioner are great products. I also recommend L’Oréal TechniArt Fresh Dust: dry shampoo will give you more time between shampoos, preserving your color for even longer.
